Wine Terms — Vineyard Edition
In Spanish, ‘cepas viejas’ means old vines — a sign of intensity and depth in the glass.
They yield fewer grapes, but with more concentration and character.
In Rioja, vines older than 35 years are generally considered ‘cepas viejas’ (old vines).
Many of these old vineyards are planted as ‘viñedo en vaso’ (bush vines) — a traditional method where each vine grows like a small bush, rooted deep in the soil and shaped by history.
Old vines = less fruit, more intensity. Have you tasted one before?
