Native Grape Varieties Rioja

There are 14 authorised grape varieties within the Rioja Wine Country. There are around 66,000 hectares of vineyards and around 409 million kilograms of protected grapes.   White Grape Varieties Viura 69% White Tempranillo 13% Verdejo 5%   Red Grape Varieties Tempranillo 88% Red Grenache 8% Graciano 2%   Tempranillo is the main variety in Rioja occupying 80% of the vineyards. This variety grows best in cooler areas. The majority of the vineyards in Rioja Alavesa are made up of Tempranillo grapes. Tempranillo can be bottled on its own (varietal) or blended with other grape varieties. Traditional rioja wines are blended wines made from Tempranillo grapes along with other varieties Tempranillo is known for its structure, tannins, savory taste and fruity flavours.   What’s your favourite grape variety native to Rioja?
