Tempranillo is the main variety in Rioja occupying 80% of the vineyards. This variety grows best in cooler areas. The majority of the vineyards in Rioja Alavesa are made up of Tempranillo grapes.
Tempranillo can be bottled on its own (varietal) or blended with other grape varieties. Traditional rioja wines are blended wines made from Tempranillo grapes along with other varieties
