Wine

Base of Bottles

Do you know what the bottom of the bottle is called? Sommeliers and waiters hold it when pouring the wine into your glass. The sedements collect around the ‘punt’. Traditionally, bottles were hand-blown. Glass blowers decided to stick their finger in the bottom to create a hallow which allowed the wine bottle to stand up straight on the table. This method also helps strength bottles used for Cava, Champagne and Prosecco because the bottle is under pressure.
