About Me
My name is Grace Duckworth and I am a Spanish-English freelance translator and an English tutor based in the Rioja region of northern Spain.
I have been living here for the past 10 years and I must say the Spanish lifestyle really suits me. I am a creative and outgoing person who is always up for a challenge. When I am not translating or tutoring, I like doing sports such as running, pilates, hiking, skiing and cycling. Travelling is another passion of mine as I have always had an interest in different cultures and learning about the local gastronomy culture in respective countries. In my free time I like spending time in the kitchen baking or preparing British, Spanish and international dishes.
Background Information
Education and Further Study
My passion for languages started at the age of 10 when I had the opportunity to study French in my last year at junior school. I was delighted to win the school prize for that year.
Throughout my secondary education I took my passion for languages even further when I went on to study Latin, German, French and Spanish. I studied a BA Hons Degree in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). Over the years I have had many opportunities to put my languages into practice, for example, I have participated in a German exchange as well as both Spanish and French study trips to the respective countries. I thoroughly enjoyed studying my undergraduate degree at UCLan and I had the opportunity to study abroad for a year as part of the course. My first six months were spent at the University of Murcia, in southern Spain, where I chose modules in linguistics and the history of Spain. During the remaining six months, I had Chinese language classes at the University of Sichuan, China.
Work Experience
After graduating in July 2015, I moved from the UK to La Rioja, Spain, to teach English to Spanish-speakers. I started my teaching career at a language academy in the centre of Logroño which gave me the experience to teach all age groups and all English levels. During my time there I grew and developed both as a person and as a teacher.
Whilst studying for my undergraduate degree, I had an interest in translation and interpreting. During my time at UCLan I took a translation module for Chinese language and an interpreting module for Spanish language. In 2018 I started an online MA course in Translation Studies at the University of Portsmouth. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and I graduated in December 2021.
In February 2023 I attended the Rioja Wine Trade Mission where I was interpreting for a wine producer.
In February 2023 I collaborated with a local tourism agency to help them communicate in English to potenial clients.
In November 2023 I worked as a freelancer for a Spanish translation agency providing support for hotels in the Dominican Republic.
In June 2024 I collaborated with a Rioja travel agency specialising in tailor-made wine tourism routes. Tourist guide with experience in the world of wine dedicated to providing foreign clients with the best possible experience on their trip to Rioja Alta and Alavesa.
I believe I have acquired all the necessary tools, skills and knowledge I need to start my career as a freelance translator. I am feeling a lot more confident and I am positive I can grow as a young entrepreneur and make Grace Communication, my freelance translation and tutoring business, a great success.
